The M113 fully tracked Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) was initially developed in the 1960s. In mid-1990, Canada’s M113A1 fleet was updated to M113A2, getting improvements in suspension and cooling systems. From 2004 to 2009, 341 M113A2 vehicles were upgraded to M113A3.
This particular vehicle was used as a prototype to demonstrate the effectiveness of a new rubber track system. This variant was then widely used when Canadian troops deployed to Afghanistan as part of the International Security Assistance Force. The new rubber band track improved the cross-country mobility and proved to be a success on this operation.
