Knitting is awesome! Celebrate the work of the many volunteers who make the world a warmer place.

Our “yarn-bombing” art project in the lobby will turn a humble First World War wagon into a colourful work of art. Learn about the women who knit for soldiers during wartime, and try your hand at making your own woolly wonders.



Art Installation

10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Watch textile artist, Amanda Schwabe, as she installs the custom-knit sweater on our horsequin (horse mannequin), part of our yarn-themed art installation inspired by the special exhibition World War Women.


Meet the Artist

11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Meet textile artist, Amanda Schwabe, and learn more about the process of designing a sweater fit for a horse!


Collaborative Art

10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Get creative and contribute to the Museum’s yarn-based art project. Make your own pom-poms and help decorate our First World War service wagon, part of our art installation inspired by the special exhibition World War Women.


Spool Knitting

10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Make your own spool knitter and learn the basics of knitting. Decorate your take-away project and practice your new skills at home.


IODE Canada

10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Meet members of the Ottawa chapters of IODE Canada a national women’s charitable organization that supported wartime knitting (among other things! ). Learn about their wartime work and about their continued community efforts as they plan to distribute the donated knit goods to organizations that need them.




World War Women – Special Exhibition Tour

Accompany Dr. Stacey Barker, historian for World War Women, and get a behind-the-scenes look at the objects and stories that make up the Canadian War Museum’s latest special exhibition.

Knitting for War

There were no idle hands during the world wars. People knit on buses, in classrooms and while waiting for dinner in restaurants. Take a closer look at the patterns and touch replica samples of the finished product.
