He was conscripted during the First World War and served in Canada until 1919.

During the Second World War, Dunkin enlisted and served with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada. On August 19, 1942, he participated in the raid on Dieppe, France. More than 900 Canadians died in the failed raid — including Dunkin.
