Cartridge Case

A brass bullet bottle on a white background at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa.

This cartridge was fired as part of the salute during Captain Nichola Goddard’s burial at the National Military Cemetery in Ottawa. She was the first female Canadian soldier to be killed in Afghanistan. Goddard was killed in battle on 17 May 2006 while directing artillery fire from a forward position.
