20 Years of the Canadian War Museum on LeBreton Flats: Honouring the Past, Inspiring the Future

Caroline Dromaguet, President and CEO of the Canadian Museum of History and the Canadian War Museum

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the opening on LeBreton Flats of the Canadian War Museum, a dynamic institution that continues to evolve in response to the world around us. Rooted in history, the Museum serves as a powerful reminder of the conflicts that have shaped both Canada and the broader world, while underscoring the enduring importance of peace.

The Museum’s striking architecture, reflecting a theme of regeneration, embodies the strength, loss and healing woven into Canada’s military experience. The building serves as a forum for dialogue, inviting visitors to engage with history and its relevance to today’s world. Through innovative programming, research, and community engagement, the War Museum continues to address pressing issues of war and peace.

As we celebrate two decades of inspiring conversations about conflict and resilience, I want to express my deep gratitude to the Friends of the Canadian War Museum, as well as the businesses and individuals that supported the Passing the Torch campaign over 20 years ago. Thanks to their generosity, more than 16 million was raised, and the foundation was laid for the building of this Museum. This generous spirit and your enduring support continue to drive the Museum’s growth.

The Canadian War Museum is dedicated to its vision to “dare to inspire tomorrow’s history.” With a focus on innovation and ingenuity, I invite all Canadians to continue supporting our efforts, ensuring that stories of service and resilience continue to inspire a peaceful and prosperous future.
