Close to Conflict – Canada and the American Civil War

Published

Apr. 15, 2026

Opening on May 29, 2026 at the Canadian War Museum, Close to Conflict – Canada and the American Civil War explores the surprising impact of this foreign clash on the Canada we know today.

When the War began in 1861, Canada was a disparate array of British colonies and territories, still years away from Confederation. As the War progressed, however, it would have a galvanizing effect on regional leaders — setting Canadian society, politics and military on a transformative path.

Although Canada was never officially engaged in the American Civil War, its impact would be felt keenly in the years preceding Confederation and long after. Through voices past and present, Close to Conflict examines how Canada evolved from a group of vulnerable colonies into a unified and active member of the British Empire — and, later, into an independent international power.

Dr. Tim Foran, Historian, Early Canada

Visitors will learn how the Civil War catalyzed the development of Canada’s armed forces and shaped its political system and society. They will encounter formerly enslaved Black Americans who found legal freedom north of the border and began a long fight for equality and justice. And they will explore the history of treaty relationships with Plains First Nations and how the border — then as now — continues to shape Indigenous lives and identities.

To ensure an accurate and respectful presentation of difficult subject matter, co-creators from Black and Indigenous communities were deeply involved in shaping the exhibition’s content, and the exhibition’s five zones will feature video interviews with commentators from diverse communities. Rounding out the experience, theme programming will bring the exhibition’s content to life for visitors of all ages.

When faced with unrest beyond its control, Canada often responds by reinforcing the values it holds dear — from strong institutions and a federal parliamentary system to a national narrative that celebrates diverse identities from around the world.

Close to Conflict – Canada and the American Civil War will be on view from May 29, 2026 through February 28, 2027. To explore related events and programming, please stay tuned to the Canadian War Museum’s social media channels, and check out the exhibition’s webpage.
