Close to Conflict invites you to explore how the American Civil War set Canadian society, politics and military on a transformative path, and why its legacies still matter today.
Explore contemporary perspectives on how Canada evolved from a group of separate and vulnerable British colonies into a unified, active, and integral member of the British Empire, and then eventually an independent power on the world stage. Learn about how the Civil War catalyzed the development of our armed forces and shaped our political system. Discover how Black Freedom Seekers escaping enslavement found legal freedom here and began a fight for social equality that continues to this day. Delve into the history of treaty relationships with Plains First Nations and how the border—then and now—continues to shape lives and identities.

A Living Legacy
As part of the exhibition, the project team consulted leading experts to explore key themes and the war’s lasting impact on communities. Five specialists were invited to share why the Civil War still matters in Canada today. Their insights appear throughout the exhibition in video clips and featured quotes.
