A day of family fun in honour of furry and feathered military friends!

Family-friendly activities highlight how animals have contributed to military efforts throughout history. Learn about the Dickin Medal for courageous animal acts and design a medal for your pet. Did you know that most Dickin Medals have gone to pigeons? Find out about their important role in military communication and watch a live pigeon release. Meet amazing CNIB guide-dogs-in-training Barney and Danson, and discover how adorable pups are trained to become invaluable canine assistants (times listed below). Make your own teddy bear inspired by A Bear in War, the poignant story of a Canadian girl who sent her beloved teddy to her father fighting in the First World War. See where the teddy bear lives in the Museum by exploring galleries on an “animal hike” with one of our program interpreters. A great day out for families with children ages 5 to 12!

Meet CNIB guide-dogs-in-training: 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Watch live pigeon release (Weather permitting): 11:30 a.m. and 3:45 p.m.
Explore the galleries on an “animal hike”: 1 and 3 p.m.

This event is made possible with the support of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind and the Ottawa Capital Pigeon Racing Club.

Please note that all activities are subject to change without prior notice.
