Today, Canada stands as a proud and independent power, defined by diverse identities, a federal parliamentary system, and strong institutions. But did you know that many of these foundations were forged in response to a war we weren’t officially part of?

Be among the first to explore how Canada and its people were shaped profoundly and indelibly by the American Civil War (1861–1865).

The exhibition Close to Conflict – Canada and the American Civil War offers a fresh, contemporary look at how the War shaped Canadian society, politics and military — and why its legacies still matter today.

Evening highlights:

  • Meet the exhibition team, enjoy Civil War-era music performed by The Folksmen, and watch a portrait of Mary Ann Shadd — one of the exhibition’s key inspiring figures — come to life as local artist Allan André paints live throughout the evening.
  • Start or end your evening with dinner and refreshments at the Museum’s Café and visit Close to Conflict – Canada and the American Civil War.

Admission is free, but registration is required. Please fill out the form below to confirm your attendance for the opening event.

Drop by anytime between 5:30 and 8 pm!
