History Museum and War Museum bring Canadian history into classrooms across the country

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

Gatineau, Quebec, October 5, 2021 — The Canadian Museum of History and the Canadian War Museum are pleased to announce that new virtual school programs will be offered free of charge for the year 2021–2022, thanks to the generosity of donors and the Friends of the Canadian War Museum.

Are you a teacher looking to give your students an authentic history learning experience in your classroom? If so, we have some incredible offers! All you have to do is visit historymuseum.ca or warmuseum.ca to book one of the interactive programs offered virtually by one of our Museums.

Through historical artifacts, personal stories, artwork, photographs and interactive presentations, the Museum’s school programs help students engage with Canada’s rich history, no matter where they live. Three programs are offered by the Museum of History, two specifically for elementary school students that focus on the First Peoples of the Northwest Coast and the highlights of the Grand Hall, as well as one for high school students about Confederation. The War Museum also offers three programs, one for younger students focusing on a soldier’s story, a First World War artifact-based program for older students, and a live presentation from a veteran for students of all ages.

It’s also possible to take part in an immersive learning experience through educational films from the comfort of a classroom, thanks to the new virtual program CINÉ+ in Your Classroom. The Teachers’ Zone — a virtual resource comprising a collection of digitized museum objects, rich background content, archival documents, short interviews, activity suggestions and more — also offers content that reflects current Canadian curricula.

The popular Supply Line Discovery Box program from the War Museum is still available. Any school in Canada can sign up to borrow a box of artifacts and resources free of charge. A similar program will soon be available at the Museum of History.

The Museums offer a wide range of dynamic and captivating learning opportunities that will fascinate students of all levels. These offers and more are now grouped under one webpage at historymuseum.ca/learn/for-teachers and at warmuseum.ca/learn/for-teachers.

Educators who want to stay connected and find out about upcoming educational offers from both Museums are invited to join the new Teachers’ Club, which offers multiple benefits. Membership is free and teachers will discover the countless ways the Museums can support them in their classrooms.
