Canadian War Museum congratulates its architects on being
awarded a Governor General’s Medal in Architecture

Ottawa, Ontario, October 17, 2008 — The Canadian War Museum is pleased to congratulate Moriyama and Teshima Architects and Griffiths, Rankin, Cook Architects, who were awarded yesterday a Governor General’s Medal in Architecture.

The joint venture between the firms resulted in the stunning architecture of the new Canadian War Museum, which opened in its new location on LeBreton Flats in May 2005.

“Raymond Moriyama and Alexander Rankin have provided the Museum with a building that resonates with our visitors, and has helped revitalize the LeBreton Flats area” stated Mark O’Neill, Director General of the Canadian War Museum.

Anne Cormier, member of the jury, commented “This is a building for war that conveys a sense of peace. Light and water offer a sense of tranquility to the darkness and solitude of the “trenches” while the mass of the building has a discrete rather than triumphant presence in the landscape.”

The Canadian War Museum is the national museum of military history. Since opening in May 2005, it has been visited by more than 1.5 million people. It attempts to help all Canadians better understand their country’s military history in its personal, national and international dimensions. The Museum emphasizes the human experience of war to explain the impact of organized human conflict on Canada and Canadians, and how, through war, conflict, and peace support operations, Canadians have affected and have been affected by the world around them. Special exhibitions and programs also explore non-Canadian and general themes related to the human experience of war and the subject of armed conflict, past and present.
