Honouring Those We Carry With Us

“My grandfather…”
“My mom…”
“My uncle…”
“My best friend…”
“My child…”

Over the past two decades, I have had the privilege of speaking with people like you across Canada who hold a place in their hearts for the Canadian Museum of History and the Canadian War Museum. Time and time again, when you explain why you give so generously, your stories begin with someone important to you — someone whose life, service or perseverance shaped your own.

Some of you speak about ancestors who served on the front lines of the First World War. Others tell me about children who are overseas right now. Many share stories of great grandparents who arrived in Canada and built a future for their families through courage and hard work. What becomes clear is that these Museums are a place where personal history meets national history.

This fall, from October through December, the Museums are placing a special emphasis on tribute gifts — donations made in honour or in memory of someone important to you. This season includes Remembrance Day and the winter holidays, moments when many of us reflect on the people who have shaped our lives. Your tribute gift is a meaningful way to participate in this campaign.

You can make a tribute gift online, by phone, or by mail — whichever is easiest for you. When you donate, simply indicate the name of the person you are honouring or remembering.

Thank you for sharing your stories with us, and for trusting us with your memories.
